Catching up with Shaina Mote

In Shaina Mote designs, you’ll find a sense of deliberateness. No question unasked, no perspective pushed aside. Whether in the details of a pleated trouser or the handfeel of a cotton knit, it’s clear Shaina and her team have rigorously – and repeatedly – asked themselves who is wearing this? and tried to address all the possible whys that come with wear.

Earlier this summer, Shaina stopped by JUDITH for an afternoon pop-up event with favorites from her SS24 collection. She was gracious to answer our questions below <3

This is a year of anniversaries. JUDITH is celebrating its first decade, and you’re celebrating 12 years! Perhaps we could start there. How has the Shaina Mote brand evolved since launching in 2012?

At the core, I always strived to create timeless pieces that can evolve with the wearer through the different stages of their lives. I have always prioritized using the most responsibly sourced materials I can. There have been different creative iterations of how this has manifested through the years of designing, but my philosophy at the core has remained.

What’s a recent manifestation of that core philosophy?

I take more time to observe my direct community and how they want to show up in the world – and with that, I strive to build the garments that people want to put on heavy rotation because of their utility, fit and style. My team and I have a lot of experience in more technical draping and pattern making – at some points in my career I leaned more heavily into this, but at this moment, I am really focused more on women’s workwear and essentials.

Do you feel your practice as an artist, designer, and business owner has shifted since moving to the Hudson Valley?

Absolutely. My community in the Hudson Valley is mainly women creators of some kind. Rachel farms the land and makes liquor from currants, Katrina is a woodworker, Sunnie farms flowers, Nicole rehabilitates horses. From this dynamic community, I have been inspired to make garments that can hold their weight and be everyday garments of utility and beauty for these multifaceted women that surround me here. There is a real connection to craft and working with your hands that I find truly inspiring.

Your collection photography is beautiful. You shoot it yourself –– how did that come about?

My first creative love was photography. Synthesizing my two creative passions took many years of building my confidence, honestly. I never thought to shoot my own collections but with a nudge from a few friends I have begun to embrace this process. Being that I am the designer, I have found I can capture the details and shapes easier than an outsider’s eye to the collection.

You recently opened a new store in Hudson. What’s it like?

Having the Hudson shop opens up new avenues for connection and creativity. I have been inspired seeing how many types of people can make a Shaina Mote style their own. Not to mention, having the physical space is super fun to merchandise and shows me the areas that are underserved in my assortment.

You strike us as a human with many projects. What are you passionate about right now?

I am really passionate about gardening and my horses!

Last but not least :) How was your summer trip to Maine?

It was so lovely – our son saw the ocean for the first time (he is just 16 months) and seeing his face in awe of the birds and sand and sky was so joyful.
